Hello and welcome to Raus! Raus! I'll try to keep this explanation as short as possible.
What's going on here?
I found myself telling a lot of people, "I can't remember anything if it's not in my blog." One instance of this occurred on a day when I was counting to 100 in German in my head for hours on end to try to memorize the numbers. Then it hit me - I needed to remember all of these things, so why not start a journal about it?
You watched Julia & Julia recently didn't you
Yes, don't judge me.
Okay, so what exactly are you doing?
I don't know. And that's the point. I'm going to be using this journal exclusively for things relating to my study of the German language. For this reason I can't guarantee that it will be in any way interesting or entertaining.
Sooo...
I'm hoping that I'll pick up a particular groove once things get rolling. I still haven't decided how this will be organized or formatted, if it will be at all. I could very well just freestyle it.
Who are you?
I'm Roz (
rozroz), a second-year university student. Formerly I was a microbiology and biotechnology double major, but I became horribly depressed by the tone of the field and the university as a whole and left that behind. Currently I have no major and am exploring subjects that aren't microbio, especially photography and architecture.
Why German?
I wanted to learn a language that isn't Spanish or French. This left Russian, Japanese, Italian, German, and Arabic. In a lengthy and controversial selection process I eventually narrowed it down to Japanese or German, and German won because there were slots left in the class.
The goal:
I hope to use this as both a study aid and a way of tracking any progress I make. Ideally, as I progress in my class, I'll become more and more experienced in the use of the German language. Ultimately my goal is to be able to express myself clearly and accurately in German over the next several semesters. In other words, ideally, there will be less and less English text in this journal over time.
More about the class:
For anyone interested, my class is a first-semester German course, meaning that I have no prior experience. The textbook is Treffpunkt Deutsch, fifth edition, and my classes take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Final:
If I get any readers on this thing, I hope that you'll find the contents... Er... Something. Educational, interesting, entertaining, whatever. Comments, corrections, and criticism are fine and even appreciated, just don't be a douche.
